In finding a pair of respectable shades, the point is simply not looking like a professional bass fisherman, NASCAR driver, or an avid fan of either sport. Sporty glasses are best left to the beach volleyball court, speed skating rink, or baseball diamond, but there are still tons of great options for every-day, around-town shades.
1. Chris Pine in Persol 0714s ($200). This is a classic style that was also good enough for Steve McQueen in the ’60s and ’70s. ‘Nuff said.
2. Jeffrey Donovan as Michael Westen in USA’s Burn Notice. While Oliver Peoples (est. 1986) doesn’t have quite have the same heritage as a Persol (est. 1917) or Ray-Ban (est. 1937), the Victory aviators ($400) are a good example of OP making the most of its 20 years in the business.
3. Johnny Depp in (what appear to be) Randolph Engineering Aviators ($99). RE has been making glasses for pilots since 1972. The Ray-Ban Caravan 3136 ($119) is another solid option for pilot-tested square-framed aviators.
