Break out of your usual weekend shoe routine by mixing in a pair of bold statement sneaks every so often. It’s easier to pull off than you might think. Rule 1: Chose the shoes wisely. Nothing you might actually run a marathon in. Rule 2: Keep everything else understated and conservative. Keep the jeans trim [...]

All my life, I’ve had the pleasure of enchanting men who are eternally in casual clothing: engineers, graphic designers, grad students, and once – a wannabe rapper. Clearly, my charm doesn’t work on William Morris agents, investment bankers, or anyone with considerable assets. I suppose I’m okay with this. But what I’m not okay with — is men who think that dressing casually means dressing carelessly in whatever is most worn-in and within reach of his bed in the morning. So, in order to aid those hard working handsome boys in dressing well enough to get a girl like me – I’d like to provide my list of 10 casual essentials:

Jake Gyllenhaal
For those of us who prefer putting forth minimal effort when it comes to getting dressed, we could probably stand to take a few style cues from Jake Gyllenhaal. Sticking with casual button-front shirts, jeans, and some classic eye wear, Jake always seems to look completely put-together without being all stuffy and over-complicated. Effortless, in a word. It’s important to have a decent pair of well-fitting jeans and a simple, not-too-baggy oxford shirt, but it’s the sunglasses here that really tie both of these looks together. Jake sticks with classic aviator and Wayfarer-esque shades.

Let’s be honest with ourselves. For all the cost savings and convenience shopping from work home affords us, getting an online purchase right can be a frustrating and potentially bank breaking ordeal. Uncertain sizes, colors, and fits can turn the simplest purchase in to an expensive, three week battle with UPS. Fighting crowds at the Grove for an hour doesn’t seem so bad anymore. But if we must go the online route, REVOLVEclothing is a good first stop. Read on for why REVOLVE rocks and for a few of our favorites:

We’re definitely glad to see the waistcoat being embraced by modern man, but we do have concerns that poor execution could sink an otherwise noble attempt at stylish self-expression. On the left, photographer Alexi Lubomirski shows why he is one of GQ’s most stylish men in America. His counterpart on the right, on the other hand, gives off the hipster-in-a-shrunken-vest vibe. The styling between the two pictures is similar enough to show that the difference between good and bad comes down to proportions. The visual lines created by the GQ version paint a long, lean figure with broad shoulders, while the Nitrolicious version comes across a little disjointed and oddly shaped. Here’s why:

Remember when premium denim first became all the rage? It was all about the back pocket design. Every brand had their signature design and it distinguished those who spent $40 on their denim versus $150-200 for True Religions, Rock & Republics, Sevens etc… Since then the back pockets have become louder, uglier, and more ostentatious from big stitching to crystallized and bedazzled pockets. Bedazzled pockets even on men’s jeans! BARF. This post applies to both guys and gals. Please stay away from denim like this:

Men are lucky, I think, in that we don’t necessarily need extensive wardrobes to be well dressed, and the less we give in to contemporary fashion trends, the better off we are. A few staple items are really all it takes to be able to dress for almost any occasion. If clothes fit well and meet or exceed expectations of appropriateness (wearing a polo when a t-shirt would be acceptable), the rest comes down to details and individual style. Using essential elements as the wardrobe foundation, building good individual style is as simple as mixing, matching, and adding in some elements of freshness.
